Patrick McManus used to write an outdoor humor column for Field & Stream. I remember one column back in the 70s or 80s about a time it was getting late in deer season and he hadn't filled his tag, so he was heading out in the woods every evening after work to try his luck during the last few hours of daylight. One evening his wife had to borrow his truck to haul a bunch of stuff for some ladies club function so he took her volkswagen bug.
Sure enough, he saw a buck, shot at and it collapsed. Due to the waning light he decided to take it home to field dress it, so he stuffed the buck into the VW unaware that he had merely grazed its skull knocking it out.
The deer came to on the ride home and sheer terror and hilarity ensued.

I always liked Patrick McManus. Met him briefly at a book signing event many years ago where I got one of his books for my oldest brother’s birthday.
In real life, my youngest sister once had an elk get up after she had shot it and had walked to where it fell. Her husband was right there and finished off the elk with a .357 magnum.
