Yawn. This happened during the Cold War and I don’t recall any mushroom clouds.

Perhaps the Americans were being polite and offering a mid-air refueling.
Spy planes? I thought satellites made those obsolete by the 1970s. Well except in a tactical role on the battlefield.

Odd how the same guy [ in the middle ] was both Khrushchev’s and Putin’s translator, even after 66 yeas had past but looks no older.
Hubby was stationed at Elmendorf 1971-1975. I can’t even remember how many times he had to leave in the middle of the night because of these kinds of situations.
