Muslims believe dogs’ saliva is impure (najis) and if they lick you it is necessary to ward off impurities and cleanse yourself before any daily prayers or protection rituals to get into Paradise. This also applied to nasal mucus.

And it isn’t that Muslims believe dogs’ saliva is impure, that’s just a reverse engineered excuse. The actual reason is that Mohammad had a homo boyfriend who would sneak into his tent at night. The dog would growl and bark, so he came out with this “dogs are haram” policy.
