A Welsh police force is investigating the 'staggering' fraud as it warns of a 'disturbing new trend'

Police have launched an investigation after a Welsh victim was swindled out of £2.1m in a "staggering" Bitcoin scam. They were tricked into surrendering a password by a cyber criminal pretending to be a senior law enforcement officer.

Within moments they had lost assets worth millions. North Wales Police is now investigating in an attempt to catch the perpetrators and retrieve the funds, as they issued a warning to anyone who owns cryptocurrency. North Wales Police have released a statement on the investigation.

A statement by the force's Cyber Crime Team said: "North Wales Police are currently investigating a staggering £2.1 million Bitcoin loss, a case that highlights a disturbing new trend targeting long-term crypto holders who use cold storage devices.

"We believe these individuals may have been identified through a data breach, making this a highly targeted and advanced scam.

"The case involves a victim who was contacted by a scammer posing as a senior UK law enforcement officer.

"The hook was a fabricated story: they claimed they had arrested an individual whose phone contained the victim's personal identification documents, emphasizing a potential security breach.

"They are not just targeting new investors; they are crafting sophisticated social engineering schemes to trick even the most diligent holders.

"Stay vigilant, protect your assets and your seed phrase, and trust your instincts."
