French president Emmanuel Macron has claimed the lawsuit he and his wife have filed against right-wing American influencer Candace Owens was put forward to 'defend his honour.'
Since last year, 36-year-old Owens has espoused a crackpot theory to her four million YouTube subscribers that Macron's 72-year-old wife Brigitte was born a man.
Owens launched a podcast series called Becoming Brigitte, in which she delves into the conspiracy. She claims that Brigitte was born under the name 'Jean-Michel Trogneux.'
Her actions led Macron and his wife to file a lawsuit in the US against Owens in July, claiming that they had 'suffered substantial reputational damage' and spent 'considerable sums of money to correct the public record.'
Macron told Paris Match that while he was warned that taking legal action against Owens may result in the '"Streisand effect", drawing even more attention to these lies... It grew so big in the United States that we had to respond.
'It is a matter of upholding the truth. It’s about defending my honour. Because this is nonsense.'
He also hit out at the Trump administration, dismissing arguments that his lawsuits was an impingement on free speech.
Referring to the Trump administration's decision to ban some mainstream outlets, he said: 'It is not freedom of speech to want to prevent the truth from being restored. Those who talk about this supposed freedom of speech are the people who ban journalists from the Oval Office. I don’t accept that.'
Instead, he claims, Owens 'knew very well that she was using false news to cause damage, in the service of an ideology and with established connections with the far Right.'

These accusations from Candace seem crazy. Yeah I know she has some thin evidence to support her contention that Macron’s wife was born a man.
My take is Candace has repeated this so many times that she half believes it. Plus she is getting intoxicated by all the clicks and views she is getting (dopamine hits) from her Mrs Macron posts.
I doubt Candace is getting paid off for her efforts. But for a sworn enemy of Macron, this is a great way to undermine him, to make him leave politics. His 25 years older wifey is very upset by all this.
Looks like Owens is about to experience FAFO.

US courts defamation of of public persons is extremely hard to sue over.

That used to be true. The difference is that the statements being attacked as defamatory are far more outrageous than the kind of thing over which public figures previously would sue. The result is a lot more successful lawsuits by public figures than we used to see a couple of decades ago.

Yep, let’s see how responsive the frogs are when it’s time for them to REFUTE the evidence provided by Candace, most of which was provided by a French investigative reporter...who, by the way, was not sued. Hmmmm?
His wife is not the one upset by Candace and her “Purity Crusade”, I too am upset with her cruel and stupid campaign for more attention. Stop harassing these people.
I had heard that the Macrons had already decided not to sue her for defamation. I hope they continue.
Someone could just as easily flip the script, and start saying Candace is actually a bio Male, since indeed, she does bear a somewhat “boyish” look to her face. If Candace Owen insists on saying that she is not actually a Trans male, she is then obligated to “prove it” to the world. See how ridiculous and wastefully negative that sounds? The Macrons need to go after the personal finances of Owens’ husband.
Maybe then, he, her husband will finally “grow a pair” and make her stop this toxic trolling. What the hell business is it of ours whatever Mrs. Macron is or is not? Who cares, other than those addicted to gossip and Mean Girl behavior.
I used to have such respect and admiration for Candace.

Whether we like,what people say or not, judges have ruled that despicable groups like the “church” group who attacks soldiers at funerals (Westboro Baptist I think it was?) Have a first amendment right to stand outside funeral proceedings and scream untrue and vile and despicable crap all day long, while families are mourning g the loss of their loved ones.

Why sue? They act like there’s something wrong with a man marrying another man, who is pretending to be a woman.
I think Westboro Baptist Church was finally weighed down by numerous lawsuits and have either disbanded or greatly reduced the scope of their demonstrations. I hear nothing about them anymore. Candace would fit right in.
