50 years ago a friend of mine worked at SAC headquarters with the job of determining which targets would do the most damage to Russia if bombed. I don’t know if this is still true, but Russian production then was based on “One Big Plant” for everything they produced. Most of their oil refining capacity back then was concentrated in central Russia making the bombers back then having to penetrate deep into Soviet territory before reaching their target. Today’s technology makes this approach very susceptible to drone attacks because of this “concentration” philosophy. I think Putin is between a rock and a hard place.

What has surprsied me is how much war production is done very close to the Ukrianian border.
