I read a story once about another jazz pianist who, when he was up-and-coming in the south and midwest, would bill himself as “the world’s greatest jazz pianist.”

According to the story, this person (who’s name I can’t bring to mind) heard Oscar Peterson play, and he stopped describing himself using those words, permanently.

Although I certainly would have put Bill Evans right up there with Oscar.
