I teach middle and high school ... judgement is the WORST thing for these knuckle heads. They’re terrified of consequences, and the thing they hate most? They can’t deal with the meer suggestion that they are not the most special and brilliant and unique little snow flakes.
If they’re average, below average — that really triggers them. But the WORST thing to them — when people don’t care one way or the other about them.
To be ignored, dismissed or disliked KILLS THEM. It’s their Cryptonite.
Once I learned that as a teacher... my life just got so much better.
I just posted about a guy I marched Drum Corps with who died of AIDS. There were actually two guys from that era who died that way. I forget what the current term for that disease is, this was back in the 90s.
My wife is a nurse at a walk-in clinic.
She used to shock me with some of the stories she came home with.
Case in point: Mothers bring in daughters for birth control because they have had their period. These girls are usually around 12 or 13 years old but some are younger. Mother’s say things like ‘She’s going to to do it - I don’t need her getting pregnant’.
One 10 year old needed birth control. When asked when her last period was she had no idea WHAT a period was. But mom wanted her to ‘be safe’.
Another common occurrence: Girls and boys with chlamydia or syphilis as young as 11.
Of course they are recorded and reported, but it does no good. Many repeat customers. So Sad.
I’ll bet the vast bulk of these walk-in “patients” are public school students.
I'd be surprised if they even knew what a consequence was.
"In all 50 states, minors can legally consent to testing and treatment for STIs and HIV. You don’t need a parent’s permission to get swabbed or treated. That right is built into public health law."
And that needs to change.
They kinda sorta do. There’s the big phrase they love throwing out “F around and find out...” so they have a vague awareness of some actions begetting repercussions. But, in that instance, it’s usually because they’ve been shown disrespect.
Ironic, because these sh*t heads have NO concept of respect when it’s on their end.
When I was working at the day treatment with the gang bangers, one little mouth breather shouted at me, “I don’t have to respect you — you aint rich (I was, i just didn’t show it), you don’t got a good car (true, because I drove it like I stole it and was on my second transmission), and you don’t bang...”
These kids were stupid AF, but demanded not just respect but adoration.
The misguided idea in education is if we treat these kids with respect without them earning it, they will respect other people. Nope, wrong-a-mundo. It just turns them into even bigger entitled sh*theads.
They just want prizes, tummy rubs and parties thrown for them. Those are GOOD consequences.
Q: What’s the first symptom of AIDS?
A: A pounding sensation in your butt.
That’s how it seems to read...
I’d say the answer is in the article title:
“Queer, 17, and...”
Oh, man, that is truly sad.
The target market is those already seriously at risk.
I have a big problem with the whole situation, but not with them getting tested.
Yes they should get tested
