More Bad Ads on TV and Cable – A Critique
American Thinker ^ | 14 Aug, 2025 | Ned Barnett

I received such an outpouring of comments to my recent bad T.V. and cable ads article that I thought I’d give this another shot.

Currently, there are so many bad ads I had no problem finding truly dreadful examples.

First, let’s check out an ad campaign that worked, American Eagle’s ads featuring Sydney Sweeney, a popular young Hollywood actress.

Apparently, she not only has good genes, but good jeans.

SNIP

Moving away from never-fail cheesecake ads, there is another new Orange advertiser. Yes, Orange is indeed the new orange. Why this remains so is beyond me. There is no study I’ve seen suggesting that orange is a palate that sells products.

This is the fourth currently running ad campaign, and the second cell phone provider – Boost Mobile – to use orange “as a message” in their ads.

Ted Danson’s ads for Consumer Cellular are saturated in orange. Now they have a less well-produced copy-cat competitor ad, cellular provider Boost Mobile.

This is the most gawdawful annoying ad on cable today.

Because of their visual similarity, the saturated orange in this horrendous ad automatically degrades the impact of all orange ads – especially when the advertisers are direct competitors.

Note to advertisers: DO NOT use your competitor’s color scheme, unless you seek to help them generate more business … at your expense.

One truly tone-deaf ad is the worst of a series of ads by LeafFilter, a product that claims to prevent gutters from becoming clogged with fallen leaves.

Several ads, shot in what looks like a warehouse, feature the president of LeafFilter, Chris Counahan, talking with a woman, Emily Barrett.

She looks and sounds like an original Reddit/YouTube/TikTok “Karen.” Cementing this notion, she’s identified as president of HOA of America.

In marketing theory ads should be designed to reach a target audience.

They must have concluded that the only people who watch the ads have IQs below room temperature and are easily brainwashed to believe insane nonsense.

ANY drug/medication ad. I’m not going to my doctor and recommend any medications...especially the blue pill.

I guess what I hate about commercials, other than the absurdity of some of their claims, is the frequency of how often they show up on TV. If the advertising company is paying for these then the programming should be free, or at least discounted for what they make off the asinine commercials which are much too freequent. There are at times some really good shows, but they are often spoiled because of the frequency of the stupid commercials. The funny commercials are sometimes entertaining, but it seems like I seldom see one these days. Most are just plain, dull garbage.

I like Mayhem.

The guy (”Rick” I think) training people to not be their parents is pretty funny.

The Oak something clinic ad with the older black man jumping around the doctor’s office, has worn pretty thin.

And to think that the big draw of cable at its onset was “no commercials”.

That was its big attraction and you were willing to pay to not be harassed. Boy, have things changed!

There’s just so darned MANY commercials now. Even fast-forwarding through them takes forever. And as they whiz by, I’m thinking, “Black person...black person...black person...black person...mixed-race couple...elderly white couple with mixed-race grandchild...black person...black person...dumb doofus white male being humiliated...black neighbor using the right product while the white neighbor is using the wrong one...black person...” etc.

Weak examples this time around for the author, yes the Sweeney ads were a grand slam and the leaf filter ads are terrible. But there has to be more example of the terrible ads out there as thee are sooo many.

Actually since my wife watches the Spanish channels, it’s not so bad there. Go figure, the only “whites” in commercials are on the Spanish channel.

The Ryze ads with Neil Patrick Harris are so LAME.

Terrible, and the white drizzle over his lips from a gay man is disgusting.

“Even fast-forwarding through them takes forever.”

We watch Law and Order reruns on DirecTV. When commercial breaks come, I ff 3.5 minutes. There are about six breaks (I never really counted). Three-and-a-half minutes is a LONG time.

“God, I hate those. Men and women spraying their genitalia with all-over body crap are also terrible.”

But think how much more deodorant they can sell if you put it on your entire body!

There is an overload of get hard ads on my computer. Don’t know why. Don’t need them. Didn’t ask for them. Don’t want them. But, ok, they can lose money, I don’t care.

The day Trump closed the border, Pluto put on Spanish speaking ads.

The Gravite commercial with the blindfolded women is so cringeworthy, I change the channel immediately. Also, the Mando whole body deodorant commercial is gross.

Interesting. It seems that that doesn’t make sense.

Here in TN on DirecTV we’ll get occasional ads in Spanish. Annoying.

Consumer Cellular was always orange. Even the ad where they said they had English speaking Americans in their customer service dept. Think they were forced to take that ad off.

Boost is hardly boost-able. They bought our old service out or something but we suddenly had them billing us out of the blue which ticked me off and then they had people who couldn’t speak English nor had a clue about anything. Very soon, the final straw was the service/coverage was crap. It isn’t a surprise they have to copy their competition.

Commercials = potty breaks, snack time, little chores, playing games and anything other than paying attention to commercials.

The blue chew tv ads featuring a bunch of females with their knockers hanging loose.....I don’t need that crap in my field of vision.
