This is what happens when you make an apex predator sacrosanct. Mountains lions are cannot be hunted in California. Take away the only predator they have, and you take away any fear of humans.

I see it more as people shouldn’t endanger wildlife by moving into its habitat, putting out bait (chicken coops, little kids gamboling about the coop in the early evening), and then get all surprised when wildlife acts naturally. I’m very glad the child wasn’t killed, but with parental foresight and common sense, perhaps she wouldn’t have been injured or the mountain lion killed.
