The line of battle in Ukraine appears to be 600 miles long.

Oddly, the Russian MOD and Ukraine intelligence service seem to agree on the number of Russian troops allocated to the Ukraine war — at about 630,000.

Tooth to tail ratios (logistic support troops to front line troops ratio) for armies has varied through the years. US in WW II 61/39 in favor of logistics support. Gulf war 72/28 attributed to complexity of weapons and ammo transport.

So of the Russian 630K a reasonable ratio would be 70/30, meaning 190K combat troops are spread out over 600 miles. 320 guys per mile, with obvious concentrations in cities and some areas getting 0 people.

Note the AIs do not include the Sumy and Kharkiv front in this so the miles number would be higher and the troop/mile number lower.

The various AIs, quoting Ukraine estimates, say that Russian multi decade norm of universal conscription for 1 year of training, then return to Reserves, means there is a 20 million available pool of mobilization. Many of these are older age and decades since their training. The estimates reduce the 20 million to about 5 million available pool for freshly trained mobilization.

Point being a huge pool not yet tapped. This point is from Ukraine sources cited by GPT and probably laid out that way to justify requests for more money. OTOH, it’s likely accurate. A 5 million man pool largely untapped.
