U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday said his special envoy Steve Witkoff had made "great progress" in his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as Washington continued its preparations to impose secondary sanctions on Friday.
Trump, in a post on Truth Social, said he had briefed some European allies about Witkoff's meeting with Putin, which was focused on ending the 3-1/2-year war that began with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
"Everyone agrees this War must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come," Trump added, without providing further details.
A White House official said earlier that the meeting had gone well, and Moscow was eager to continue engaging with the United States.
The official said secondary sanctions that Trump has threatened against countries doing business with Russia were still expected to be implemented on Friday. No details were provided.

This is only the 127th time ‘great progress’ has been made with Russia. Ukrainians should brace for tonight.
Putin is preparing for another failed Oreshnik test launch, too.
I doubt “everyone agrees”; certainly not Putin.
As noted before, were Zelensky to be kidnapped and removed from Kiev by Russians, a replacement military junta come to power there and order all forces to stand down — and reach understanding with Russian forces that they will occupy all oblasts of Ukraine — temporarily — and all MI6 and CIA personnel in Ukraine be executed . . .
If all of that happened, the media, and the WH, would announce it as victory and the end of the war, with all Russian troops withdrawing to the Donbas and Crimea at the end of the “temporary” period, during which they disarmed all Ukraine forces. The junta will be completely technocratic, refuse all EU overtures and all NATO overtures, and begin collecting transit fee for gas traversing Ukraine to Romania and Poland.
Those withdrawn Russians would be hyped, videoed, and people interviewed who call it a great NATO victory and that’s that. Bottom line, there is no way for the Ukraine folks to be disappointed. They will be told everything they want to hear.
Trump talks too much.
Or better yet...a bullet to Putin’s head.

Then what?
