“ which will take effect Aug. 27”

He always leaves room for the target of his ire to backtrack.

China buys over 2 million barrels a day from Russia. Is Trump putting similar additional tariffs on China? No.

Diplomacy thy name is duplicity.

What do we import from India? Never seen a “made in India” label.

7-Eleven and Mini-Mart employees.

Do what they did in Puerto Rico….zero taxes on manufacturing.

That's pretty easy to do when the U.S. is your part-time Sugar Daddy.

America told India to buy Russian oil to keep prices stable and inflation under control.

How many on FR, screaming on about Russian Oil will then howl when oil touches 90$, causing pump prices and so inflation to go up. Can America and Europe afford to take Russian barrels off the market?

[What one of these executive orders looks like]

Executive Order 14114 of December 22, 2023

Taking Additional Steps With Respect to the Russian Federation’s Harmful Activities

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (50 U.S.C. 1701 et seq.) (IEEPA), the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1601 et seq.), and section 301 of title 3, United States Code, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, in view of the Russian Federation’s continued use of its military-industrial base to aid its effort to undermine security in countries and regions important to United States national security, including its reliance on the international financial system for the procurement of dual-use and other critical items from third countries, and in order to take additional steps with respect to the national emergency declared in Executive Order....

[NOTE: Many people think FDR’s embargo on Japan lead to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Sanctioning can backfire badly and hurt, not help, the cause of national security. India can unilaterally stop exporting life-saving generic drugs to the USA.]

China has a more advanced industrial base than India.

China can supply also everything India could.

Cashews and Basmati rice might be hard to get in Moscow come 2026 though.

Its not even diplomacy. Trump is scared of Chinese retaliation. EU cant be touched anymore.

Trump claimed credit for stopping the India-Paki war. India contradicted him. Multiple times. Paki nominated him for a Nobel Peace prize. He invited Paki Islamist General (and NOT the elected Prime Minister) to the WH for Lunch. India is paying the price for not massaging his ego. Pakis are playing him and literally getting away with murder.

Meanwhile the US harping on the "democracy, democracy" theme has gone to hell. Along with the Quad.

Too bad tariffs don’t impact the call centers in India — make them pay a tariff / fee for that “service” they provide to the USA.

And for the ones who are here on H1B, have Rubio de-activate their Visas.

“ which will take effect Aug. 27” He always leaves room for the target of his ire to backtrack.

Maybe, but also maybe room for him to not go ahead with the tariff. US trade negotiatiors are coming to India for talks from August 25th. Seems deliberate to me.

India won't backtrack on Russian oil, maybe say something perfunctory but no real change. Public mood in India is one of anger towards the US and Trump and the Indian government will feel that pressure. This has damaged US-India relations for a long time to come.

This will have foreign policy repercussions. The Chinese Foreign Minister is making a visit to India and a pending visit of the Indian PM to China for the SCO meet has just been confirmed today. Putin is also expected to be there. The Indian NSA is in Russia today and the Foreign minister is expected to go there later this month.

We live in interesting times.

It is true. Most of the generic medicines comes from India. It would theoretically be very hard for the US to do without it in the near future. However, medicines are exempt from either the original tariff or the secondary tariff. India won't be looking to restrict it either. A point of leverage theoretically but one that is in no danger of being used now.
