India doesn't tariff the US specifically , those are the tariffs on those products. For all countries. Other than any FTA's. Tariffing generally versus tariff singling out countries are different. If the US has a 20, 50 or a 70% tariff for all countries for a particular product, there would be no discrimination and no argument.

When the US wanted a naval coalition to deal with the Houthis and the Somali pirates, they got a dozen countries together - UK, Germany & some gulf countries sent a ship each. Australia & Canada sent a couple of personnel each with no ships. India didn't join the coalition but sent a dozen ships to help patrol the area in support of the Americans. China did nothing. What do you think will happen the next time the US asks?

This whole thing is daft because it is unnecessary. India will remember this slight. Most Indians , to this day, remember that the US sent its 7th fleet to intimidate India in the 1971 war with Pakistan which resulted in the birth of Bangladesh. Didn't work then but put India-US relations in a cold freeze for 30 years. A similar chill will result now. Any idea that India might help the US in the event of China invading Taiwan just went out of the window. QUAD too. The Chinese must be delighted. They even get to have a Xi-Modi-Putin meet the end of this month, with Modi visiting China after 7 years.

This punitive tariff does give rise to the question of whether they fall into the scope of the IEEPA. To me a plain reading of the text is that it does not.

A re-balancing of the global order is not a simple task.
But I can see the long term goal ... I can't however see all of the short term moves.

or we will all be eating out of survival food buckets.

I too trust Trump for the most part. But I do have misgivings at times. Which I am perhaps too impatient to have corrected.

I honestly believe Trump is misusing tariffs.

They aren't being targeted against hostile countries (i.e. China) and they aren't being used to protect strategic industries (i.e. microprocessors). They are blanket tariffs on EVERYTHING of any value. They are nothing but a TAX HIKE. My guess is the plan is to print and tariff our way out of the federal debt as neither tax increases or true budget cuts will be politically acceptable.

There might be another reason for wanting to force ALL production back to the USA. I can see why bringing back high tech industries makes perfect sense. But do we need to protect industries that haven’t existed here since 1945?

But why bring back production of things that are unprofitable in the USA and that have multiple sources from multiple allies? America only has so many workers. Is he planning on raising the retirement age to 90 and bringing back child labor? Maybe force real estate agents and grocery clerks into the coal mines? That might work in Soviet Russia or Nazi German. Not here.

The way I see it, it only makes sense if he plans on DEFAULTING ON THE DEBT. If our money and our credit is worthless, even allies will want to be paid in tangible goods (minerals, gold, durable goods). Which means that autarky will be necessary.

The good thing is that we would no longer have an illegal alien problem. The US government would also be made whole. The bad thing is that it will be done on the backs of the the American people and our standard of living will collapse.
