Caitlin Clark has done for the Women’s National Basketball Association what Michael Jordan once did for the NBA—made it more valuable, watchable and marketable. Instead of protecting its transformative star, the league’s leadership ignores the relentless targeting of Ms. Clark, treating its greatest asset as if she were a PR headache. That approach could turn into a legal liability for the WNBA.
Since she joined the league last year, Ms. Clark’s impact has been seismic: Merchandise sales soared 601%, Indiana Fever viewership jumped 170%, the team’s value tripled, League Pass subscriptions climbed 366%, app engagement rose 613%, and her endorsements topped $11 million. She’s the economic engine driving the league forward.
Yet she routinely faces intentional hits, excessive fouling and uncalled abuse while referees look away. Teammate Sophie Cunningham said what fans already know: “The star player of the league is not being protected.” Ms. Clark herself noted: “Everybody is physical with me. They get away with things others don’t.” Three injuries have sidelined her for 10 games and the All-Star Game, with ratings plummeting 55% without her.
Is it because Ms. Clark is white? A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces, a three-time league most valuable player, thinks so. She has said that race is a “huge thing” and that “it boils my blood when people say it’s not about race because it is.” Under civil-rights law, race-motivated patterns trigger scrutiny even without explicit discriminatory intent.
Systemic missed calls include viral replays of Ms. Clark being fouled multiple times in a single possession. “Every single one of them is a foul,” analyst Rebecca Lobo said. Ms. Clark absorbed 17% of flagrant fouls last season—double her peers’ rate. This isn’t merely bad officiating—it’s dangerous and unequal. She endures blindside checks and midair collisions—plays that trigger reviews in other leagues.

No, she hasn’t. Its never going to be profitable and make money on its own. Women dont support it. The only reason its existed for so long is because the nba gives it tens of millions of dollars a year to play to smaller crowds than high school basketball teams.
If it were an endeavor run by men it would have flopped a long time ago because no one would pump tens of millions of dollars into it for decades and have it never make money.
Remeber all the failed football leagues? No one propped them up this long. Real businesses get sponsors and start small, and grow because they attract fans. Decades and the womes leagues cannot do it. On top of it their entitlement mentality is so massive they think they should earn nba salaries.
White people don’t have civil rights.
Please explain to me why Roger Goodell is trying to recreate the NFL's image into the XFL, which failed 25 years ago?
No she hasn’t what?
The xfl is a failure, my point exactly. No other business is propping it up with tens of millions of dollars. There is no massively profitable nba-type business keeping it afloat with tens of millions of its own dollars. Its not happening.
The first sentence of the article.
Do you just find my posts to be argumentative? If so, I’d rather you argue with others.
Caitlin Clark is a real star. Sort of like Tiger Woods in golf.
Anyway, she has been out most of this season due to injuries. No one on her team has her back except for Sophia Cunningham.
Her team is not really supporting her, not even her coach.
She's being blackballed by the league.
Regardless, my comments stand. She isnt going to make the wnba work. It will never be profitable.
The potential is there. She's the female version of Stephen Curry.
But you are probably right. It will never be profitable.
Clark should just drop out and go to that 3 on 3 league that she was offered stupid money for. The W will come crying very quickly.
They won’t ever make the necessary changes that are needed to make it profitable. I’d be happy if they could, but they won’t. No one is pushing them to.
“”””They won’t ever make the necessary changes that are needed to make it profitable.””””
Please don’t suggest bikinis, it would be a nightmare.
If you like to watch jump shot contests then the WNBA is for you. I have no interest in it at all.
Not what I was thinking.
It is unfortunate to say, but true. Every game when Clark plays is a slightly less brutal version of Cincinnati, on numerous levels.
The WBNA is just a way to give a lot of worthless black women a way to make money. I’m not saying all the black women playing are worthless because they’re not. But a percentage of them fit that description to a tee. They’d be mixed up with lots of bad stuff if they couldn’t play ball.
I don’t care if that sounds bigoted because there’s a lot of truth to it. No one should be too surprised that a talented white girl is getting abused by a certain type of players.
Whether it is her college videos, or with the WNBA, I just love watching her get nothing but net from waaaay downtown!
Is Caitlin Clark good enough to play in the NBA?
If the WNBA consisted of six teams...all built like the ‘Fever’, with consistent great play, and all within 500 miles of each other...I think the league could be profitable and be unconnected to the NBA. I’m not saying NBA profitable, but probably making double what the league makes now.
The chief problem, over the past 20 years...they’ve sold themselves as the LGTBQ-league....as fashion-divas, and about half of the starting players by age 28 have peaked out (needing desperately to be forced into retirement). Half of the teams are in sub-standard arenas....just large enough to handle 5k guests.
