Unless Russia surrenders the lands that she forcibly annexed from Ukraine, she will continue being a pariah state for decades to come.

And while a compromise might delay Ukraine's eventual accession to NATO, Ukraine will nonetheless immediately start forging military alliances with individual Western powers, effectively sealing Russia's fate.

I can envisage no outcome that will allow Putin to portray himself as a victorious hero in the eyes of the Russian people.

Putin's military adventurism and expansionism will cost Russia dearly. His failed war will consign Russia to the geopolitical backwaters of History for decades to come.
