I’ve heard it since I was a youngster. I’m surprised it has authors...I would have thought Mother Goose or “traditional.”
I’m not sure whether the 2nd author is expectorating, jumping, or via German, hoping.

I believe it started as a nursery rhyme but the three “authors” set it to music in the 1940’s.
