One suspect is in custody and another is being sought following a break-in at a Downtown Los Angeles police yard in a possible attempt to steal catalytic converters from out-of-service patrol vehicles Thursday morning.

Police responded to a report of suspects cutting LAPD vehicles shortly after 3 a.m. on the 500 block of Ramirez Street, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson confirmed to KTLA.

Video showed multiple patrol vehicles and an air unit responded, with a large group of officers with guns drawn seen searching the salvage yard for any suspects.

Catalytic Converters have been the motivation for millions of car break ins and car vandalism. I have also experienced this theft. I will admit right now, that I don’t know much about cars, nor have I ever really cared that much about them, so long as my own car worked sufficiently.

So, my question is, are there feasible alternatives to having a catalytic converter? Other methods of getting the same function done, but with a device that does not have any precious metals contained within?

Hey Leroy, I have an idea. Let’s steal catalytic converters from the police vehicle storage yard. Sincere black, the cameras will never see us!

There are covers you can buy for your Cat. I used Dremel tool and engraved VIN on my cat. Also spray painted number with Heat Red Paint (Rustoleum). No self-respecting thief will risk stealing something he knows he can fence.

In spite of all the hardships LA has endured lately, it’s heartwarming to see that the simple everyday folks have rolled up their sleeves, put on their protective eyewear, picked up their cordless grinders, and gotten back to work.👍🏻😂

Those are good methods to change the appearance of the Cat you’ve got. If someone knew enough to ask for it, there are probably lots of privately owned Auto Repair Shops that would do this for a small fee. Bigger repair shops and dealerships might not think there is enough money in it for their mechanics.

How emboldened have California criminals become? They’re now stealing catalytic converters from secured police yards while their Communist pollical leaders call for violence against law enforcement and law abiding citizens.

“possible attempt to steal catalytic converters”

Seems to me we should pass a law that companies that buy and salvage copper and catalytic convertors should have a federal license to engage in that and if caught doing that without the permit would have their business confiscated and face heavy fines and jail time.

Apparently, LA police aren’t doing much these days to back up their motto of “To Protect and to Serve”. It’s beyond pathetic what the left has done to Los Angeles and to California as a whole. It’s only going to get worse there.

“”No self-respecting thief will risk stealing something he knows he can fence.””

Do you think thieves have self respect? You mean, “can’t fence?”

Why don’t they just go in and steal the entire vehicles - take them to their chop-shops and paint them and drive them over the border?

Only a few years ago when there was an epidemic of stolen catalytic converters, there WAS talk of penalties for anyone buying them from the thieves. Guess that all died down - out of sight - out of mind.

It calls them “out of service “ which I thought meant no working or needed repair
And the gates to drive through might be harder than slipping through fence

In today’s world, thieves are pretty brazen and fear nothing so they could STEAL wreckers, tear down the gates, haul the cars away - THEN to the chop shop and then to the border. Do necessary repairs also to get them running. Nothing to it. LOL

Nicholas Cage knows how to do it - maybe he’s between films..Good movie - “Gone In Sixty Seconds.”

Catalytic converters

I think this particular epidemic could be solved by allowing only repair shops or people with a sales receipt of a new one submit them for scrap. All others should be reported to the fuzz.
