Went through Basic Training in 1957 at Fort Smith, Arkansas, July and August, WW II barracks no air, not even a fan, sure glad they didn't ask us to march in parades or go on those silly 10 mile hikes because it was really hot. Oh wait we did do all that stuff plus much more. I don't remember a single trooper dropping dead.

I was never in the military. My older brother was a lieutenant in The Marine Corps in the late 70s. He said in the OCS class he was in a recruit died of heat stroke on a training mission but it seemed the poor kid also had some underlying condition no one knew at the time.
