Overview
Yes, it generally costs a business to accept a payment, even a very small one like a penny, via debit card. This is due to several fees associated with debit card processing, which typically include interchange fees, assessment fees, and processor fees.
Here’s a breakdown
Interchange Fees: These are paid to the bank that issued the debit card to the customer, according to Pay.com. The amount is usually a combination of a flat fee per transaction and a percentage of the transaction amount. In the US, the Durbin Amendment caps the interchange fee for debit cards issued by large banks (over $10 billion in assets) at $0.21 + 0.05% of the transaction value (plus an additional $0.01 for fraud prevention if applicable), .
Assessment Fees: These are charged by the card networks (like Visa, Mastercard) to the merchant’s bank for the use of their payment network, according to P3 Cost Analysts. They are typically a flat fee per transaction.
Processor Fees (or Markup Fees): These are charged by the payment processor that handles the transaction on behalf of the business. These fees can be structured in various ways, such as a flat fee per transaction, a percentage of each transaction, monthly fees, or a combination.
Therefore, even a one-cent debit card transaction would likely incur these fees, which can collectively add up and be proportionally much higher than the actual transaction amount.

Abortion is a state issue. Nothing is stopping the State of CA from funding these places. Nothing is stopping people from donating to these places.

There is something people need to understand. Liberal institutions, only work when they receive government money. They complain about how Republicans want to burn everything down, but when Liberals are asked to pony up to support these institutions, they suddenly go missing.
