Delta Airlines Boeing 767 Makes Emergency Landing After Engine Catches Fire
The aircraft had just taken off on Friday when one of its engines caught fire.
The flight, headed to Atlanta, turned back to LAX within minutes of takeoff.
“Another reason my wife and I haven’t flown since 9/11: no more 4-engine planes...”
Engine fires are more likely on four engine planes.
Granted...
However, one engine on fire leaves three still running...
Two engines on fire leave two still running...
This is important... If you ever, back in the 60s and flew the shuttle from DC to NYC and back in those awful old Constellations, there was hardly ever a trip when one of the engines did not blow oil all over the windows of the plane...
Log entry 3715: Evidence wiped clean.
All multi-engine aircraft are designed to fly with ONE engine out. There are rare instances where a four engine aircraft has been able to fly with two out—but extremely rare (i.e. not a heavy or max takeoff weight).
Therefore, a two engine commercial airliner is just as safe as a four engine jet. Even the President flies on a two engine jet when the 747 is not needed.
