Astronauts have described the smell of space as similar to sulfur or gunpowder, with some also noting a metallic or burnt scent. Former NASA astronaut Thomas Jones, for example, noted the smell on his spacewalks, saying it was reminiscent of ozone, sulfur, or gunpowder. This unique scent is believed to be caused by atomic oxygen clinging to spacesuits and then reacting with other elements upon return to the capsule.
