Grieving family attacked after excited daughter, 11, ran ahead at beauty spot and tumbled off 20-story cliff

A grieving couple have been inundated with hateful criticism after their excited child ran ahead of them on holiday and fell to her death from a huge cliff.

Bianca Zanella and her family were on vacation last Thursday when the 11 year-old ran away from her father and tumbled down Fortaleza Canyon in Cambará do Sul, a city in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul. She died on impact.

Zanella's parents and her two younger brothers returned to Curitabá – where they reside in the nearby state of Paraná – on Friday and the little girl's body arrived Saturday for the wake and burial services.

Carolina dos Santos, who is representing the family, called on the public to support the grieving parents instead of blaming them for their daughter's death.

Zanella had Autism Spectrum Disorder levels two to three.

'In this moment of tragedy, of profound sadness for this family, Brazilian society must show solidarity and respect the memory of Bianca, who was an autistic girl, who lived and was included,' dos Santos said during a press conference Saturday at the funeral home.

'It is very easy for public opinion to judge a family, a family that wanted to give Bianca a dignified and inclusive life. May Brazilian society understand that people with disabilities have the right to have a dignified life.'

Zanella's parents, whose names have not been released by authorities, have yet to publicly comment on the tragic incident and will not be planning on doing so, the lawyer said.

Indeed, our family has vacationed in the Western canyons and we would aften see children of a leash. It’s simply safety.

I like to joke that the best way to raise kids is with duck tape and rope.

“But for those that blame the parents, should this child have been harnessed and leashed like a dog? “

A harness and leash is not unreasonable for such a child if it means the child does not go off a cliff like the coyote chasing the road runner and ends up dead, unlike the coyote.

They say “an once of prevention is worth a pound of cure” but in this case it was worth the price of a coffin and grave.

The 24/7/365 news cycle starves for stories and will go to the furthest corners of the earth to find them including a remote corner of Brazil. Anything to fill the headlines and space and get clicks.

Constant turmoil. You have to not just turn it down, you have to ignore it and tune it out. Then you may become anxious about what you don’t know but need to..

BINGO the liberals went nuts big time with that product but it saved many lives.

So you know it was a good idea.

Safety companies carry vest type harnesses that would fit a child or adult .

Zanella had Autism Spectrum Disorder levels two to three.

Took awhile in the narrative to get to that point.

“Grieving family attacked after excited daughter, 11, ran ahead at beauty spot and tumbled off 20-story cliff”

Must be the translation, but cliffs don’t have stories. They are measured in feet/meters not stories.

Reminds me of parents I’ve seen at the Grand Canyon. Children there NEED leashes! Unruly children running around just a few feet from certain DEATH!

NO, not MILES of fences, just common sense of parents.

My little brother was a wild child, always running everywhere. My parents finally gave in and got a leash for him. It was that or never let him play outside. This was in the 50’s and was frowned upon bigly. But what else can you do?

They have “leashes” for severely autistic kids in NYC.

My mom had me and my sister (4 and 2) on leashes on the boat to Japan to join my dad.
And I'm not artistic at all.

I wouldn’t go out of my way to scourge the grieving parents, but since you solicited opinions:

The parents blew it when they chose to take their autistic, excitable child, to visit an unbarricaded 20-story cliff. Binding an 11 year-old hand and foot does not make for a happy holiday; and, no amount of “watching” will stop such a child from darting off, after which it can be too late. The parents should have taken their child to relatively safe places, with much larger margins for error.

Cynics and the police might ponder whether the parents desired, consciously or unconsciously, to get rid of a burdensome child. I’d chalk it up to a lack of foresight and common sense. I bet the police have interviewed people who knew the family, combed their social media, and otherwise looked for indications.

I was at the dentist’s office when a small child bolted and was half way out the door.

His mother shouted their code word and he immediately froze.

My wife tends to freeze in some situations. We have a code word which causes her to focus only on me for instructions.

A High Reach Harness would probably work for an adult anyway(Used when on Boom lifts and whatnot.)
