Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed that he discussed his country's role in helping America win its independence during a call with President Donald Trump on July 3 in a bid to highlight the history of cooperation between their nations, according to Russian news agency Tass.
-snip-
But on Sunday, he revealed that he also tried to press upon Trump the historical ties between the two countries, going back to the founding of America.
"We have always had, for a very long time, very good and special relations with the United States," Putin told Russian television host Pavel Zarubin. "We supported their aspirations for independence from the UK We actually supplied weapons."
"We helped them with money," he said. "Afterward, we supported the North during the North-South war. So in this sense we found things that united us."

The “what the ...” look on Tucker Carlson’s face sums it up.
Regarding Putin's claim about helping the U.S. Achieve Independence. Perhaps Putin is alluding to Prussia. Prussia was centered around the region of East Prussia, which is now part of modern-day Poland and Russia. General Baron von Steuben was from Prussia. He was born in Madeburg, Prussia, which became part of the Russian Empire in 1795.
Catherine the Great ruled Russia in 1776. And she was German.
The Russian fleet came to New York in September of 1863. The Russians were warmly welcomed by New Yorkers, and seen as a counterweight to the British and British Navy, who were supporting the South outright, at least commercially.
And - History keeps repeating itself - the Russians were occupied in Poland (ie. Belarus and Ukraine) with British-French proxy war aiding a Polish rebellion.

Prussia was a Germanic state. The King of Prussia was the Emperor of Imperial Germany, AKA the Second Reich. Nothing the least bit Russian about that.
Thanks for the link and the info. I’m always interested in learning new history. By the way, after the war, von Steuben was granted land in Remsen, NY which is just north of me. He’s buried there.
European aristocrats shopped their children around, especially their daughters to try to make the best alliances with countries that would enhance their fortunes and their country's defense. She wasn't liked very well when she first married and came to court, but she eventually overthrew her husband, took the reins of power, and proved herself a great asset to Russia.
Von Stueben began his military career as an enlistee and became an officer, a captain I believe but was drummed out for some reason.
He came to America and passed himself off as nobility but what the heck, he was the right guy at the right time.
She wasn’t a mongol like the rest of them. And Russia was a craphole back then, too.
Cold War where they said they would destroy us was mighty friendly, Berlin Wall was mighty friendly, whatever Russia may or may not have done in the past has nothing to do with pitin and modern Russia
Murder of US Army Major Arthur D. Nicholson Jr. by East German sentry was mighty friendly, March 24, 1985.
John Adams did send a delegation to Moscow to try to drum up support. The most notable aspect of this was that John Quincy Adams, age 14, was the secretary of the delegation, since he was the only one available who spoke and wrote fluent French.
However, the Russians declined to pony up any money.
John Adams son John Quincy spent considerable time in Russia and was able to forge close ties. His first trip was as an aide to a more senior person who proved incompetent, but JQ’s father thought he should go for the experience. Then there was a later trip that secured support around the War of 1812.
People do forget the entirety of the Revolution could have been erased with a solid loss in the war of 1812.
OK, that may well be, but we saved their asses in WW2.
Putin is the product of Soviet and Mongol Russia.
Russia sent warships to US harbors in our Civil War to help fight the British Navy.
Russia is not our enemy, in fact, the EU is more a threat to the US than Russia will ever be.
Yes!
Funny how Soviet-Mongol bred Putin tries to attach himself to the Tsars and Empresses that were not of his ancestry.
