I used to drive bus loads of kids to a Christian camp in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula
Years ago just before we left for the long drive from Detroit, we were told that three camp staff members were killed in a car crash. A fourth survived.
We had a busload of 9-11 year old girls and we decided to not tell them about the tragedy. Camp staff would do that. (One was my daughter)
When we arrived you could cut the grief with a knife. The girls exited the bus excited about camp while the staff was berely holding it together.
About 30 minutes later the whole vibe changed. The staff came to the conclusion that the girls needed camp and so did they.
Another miracle happened. As word spread among the churches, men and women who had some connection to camp showed up in droves. They knew that regular staff would need to grieve and attend funerals so they just showed up to serve.
25 years later it still chokes me up.
My daughter has been a counselor at that camp since she was old enough to serve. She’s there now. One of my sons and my other daughter will be there serving next week. (My son is the session director.
Christian summer camp is an awesome experience for children. Many are led to know the Lord at them, including me.
Wow.
