I don’t know about suitable but Death Valley and the Mojave Desert in CA come to mind! There’s the old ghost town of Bodie, CA with some buildings badly in need of repair - 40 miles of bad road to get there. OK - may not be 40 miles but it sure seemed like it...Also there’s Manzanar - the old relocation camp for Japanese-Americans during WWII. ALL in the middle of NOWHERE! Bodie is a CA state historic park so probably could ask Newsom for permission..He might be willing to cooperate!
