Trump Says He Made No Progress With Putin on Ukraine in Call
Wall Street Journal MSN News ^ | 7/3/2025 | Alexander Ward, Georgi Kantchev

President Trump spoke by phone Thursday with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the war in Ukraine but made no headway on halting the fighting.

“I didn’t make any progress with him today at all,” Trump said of Putin, speaking to reporters as he left Washington to deliver a speech in Iowa.

According to a Kremlin briefing on the call, Trump urged Putin to quickly end the war in Ukraine but Putin refused.

It was the two leaders’ first conversation since U.S. officials said this week they had paused a series of weapons shipments for Ukraine. Trump indicated the U.S. hadn’t decided to withhold arms to Kyiv, but he added that the U.S. was examining whether it needed them for Pentagon stockpiles.

“We have to make sure we have enough ourselves,” he said.

Trump urged Putin to quickly end the war in Ukraine but the Russian president refused, according to a Kremlin briefing on the call.

Putin told Trump during the call that Russia won’t back down from its goals in Ukraine, according to Yuri Ushakov, a close adviser to the Russian president, despite the U.S. leader’s calls for a speedy end of the conflict.

“Our president said that Russia will achieve its goals, that is, the elimination of the well-known root causes that led to the current state of affairs,” Ushakov said, quoted by state news agency TASS. “Russia will not back down from these goals.”

Demilitarization = reduction of the Ukrainian military to a token force unable to defend against further Russian aggression.

Denazification (as defined by Russia) = suppression of the Ukrainian national identity and the elevation of the Russian; elimination of all opposition to Russian domination; replacing the elected government with one chosen by Moscow.

Protection for Russian-speaking populations = elevation of Russian as co-equal language as Ukrainian; elimination of all efforts to promote Ukrainian among Russian speakers; exclusive use or Russian in majority Russian speaking regions.

As for Russia actually accomplishing these goals, 3 1/2 years for war show that it is easier said than done. Russia is no closer to achieving these goals as it was three years ago and is facing its own economic crisis that calls into serious doubt their ability to continue this war for much longer.

“Kiev was founded by Swedish Vikings.”

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Absolutely. I shared a long post about that here last year, but it bears repeating — because it shatters the illusions so many still cling to. The very term “RUS” didn’t originate in Moscow or anywhere near it. It came from Sweden.

Without Sweden, there would be no Russia.

And let’s talk about Putin: his ancestors trace back to the Mongols — he has no rightful claim to the legacy of Rus. He’s an imposter wielding brute force to warp and abuse what he dares to call “Russia” today. Worse still, he desecrates the real historical Russia, which was born not in Moscow, but in none other than Kyiv, Ukraine. We have to note that the slavic people actually requested Kiev to be governed by the RUS (the Swedish Vikings) to end the chaos that existed in that area. The Swedes intervened and made the area great again.

Thus... :
The word Russia itself stems from the Swedish Rus, Viking seafarers from Roslagen in Sweden. Every time someone calls Moscow the cradle of Russia, they deny the truth: Russia’s origins lie in the Viking settlers who founded Kyiv hand in hand with the slavic people there, not the Mongol autocrats of the Kremlin (which started to exist +500 years later).

Putin is the greatest imposter the world has ever seen.

Supply and demand determines the exchange value for the number of joules found in a gallon of a pre-defined API grade. You can’t eat oil.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Nah, this is one of those media secrets.

The price of oil — that gets quoted in the media — gets decided by a handful of traders on NYMEX and the London Exchange, who obviously can be instructed to do . . . whatever.

Russia and KSA both would be insane to price their product according to a number published by an activity located in hostile countries.

They sell to refineries around the world. NYMEX will get quoted by the purchasing folks at the refineries, but the Russkies and Saudis can just nod and ignore that.

An increasingly big deal is that shale sourced oil is diesel poor. If a customer needs to power trucks to haul food, the US is not going to be the source.

But in a general sense, best to remember that for about 72 hours in spring of Covid 2020, the price of oil was NEGATIVE $20/barrel, per NYMEX. Nobody shipped oil at that price.

Money is a tool of convenience that largely can define nothing.

None of what you say changes the fact that it’s the price of oil (i.e. what you’re able to get in exchange for it) that matters to an economy, particularly one that depends on oil exports, rather than its joule content.

Your elaborate explanation does nothing to change that nor does it change the hard reality, market gimmickry aside, that supply and demand are ultimately what drives the price of oil.

Where did you get this idea that Russia and KSA have the same agenda and are in synch regarding oil production and pricing? If you haven’t noticed, KSA has allied itself very closely with the U.S. since Trump came back into office. Trump has much leverage over them, both positive and negative, and he’s used it in the past to get them to change their oil production levels in order to bring it to levels that better serve U.S. interests.
