I have been told that Waffle House restaurants can be used to determine the strength of a tornado. They are all built exactly alike and enough have been hit with tornados that the damage level can be equated to tornado strength.

“I have been told that Waffle House restaurants can be used to determine the strength of a tornado.”

“Waffle House is known for its ability to remain open 24/7, even during extreme weather events, which has led to the creation of the Waffle House Index.”

“The Waffle House Index is an informal metric used to gauge the severity of a storm’s impact on a community, based on the operational status of Waffle House locations in the affected area.”

“FEMA unofficially uses the Waffle House Index to assess the damage in an area and inform disaster response efforts. An open Waffle House can signify that a community is on the path to recovery, as it provides a sense of normalcy and can serve both residents and first responders.”
