Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo conceded to state assemblyman Zohran Mamdani in New York City's Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday night.
Why it matters: Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist, is on course for an earthquake victory after running an extraordinary grassroots campaign focused on affordability in America's largest city.
- Mamdani was leading 10 other Democrats — including his top opponent, scandal-ridden Cuomo — in the first round of the ranked-choice election as of late Tuesday night.
- Mamdani's policy proposals include rent freezes, free buses, and city-run grocery stores, all funded by $10 billion in new taxes on corporations and the wealthy.
By the numbers: Mamdani received nearly 44% of votes with 90% of votes counted as of 10:30pm on Tuesday, per AP.
- Cuomo received 36% of votes.
What they're saying: Cuomo said he called Mamdani Tuesday night to concede and congratulate him on his expected victory.
- "Tonight is his night," Cuomo said at a watch party. "He deserved it. He won."
Speaking at his election night party in Queens, Mamdani promised to be a "mayor for every New Yorker, whether you voted for me, for Gov. Cuomo, or felt too disillusioned by a long-broken political system to vote at all."
- He added: "We have won because New Yorkers have stood up for a city they can afford. A city where they can do more than just struggle. One where those who toil in the night can enjoy the fruits of their labor in the day, where hard work is repaid with a stable life."
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), who along with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), backed Mamdani's campaign, also congratulated him.
- "Billionaires and lobbyists poured millions against you and our public finance system. And you won," she wrote on X.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
I am glad I don’t live there. There is little chance that Curtis Sliwa (R) can win in NYC, though he is just what they need.
Stupid Mayor Nipple Ring should have never thrown his hat in the ring.
I have a feeling that the exodus of businesses and residents up to now is going to look like small beans after this communist gets elected.
Looks like New York is following London’s lead. God help the people of New York.
“”Looks like New York is following London’s lead. God help the people of New York.””
When you consider how many Jews reside in New York City... I predict a massive flood of “refugees” headed south, and especially to Florida. Let NYC leftists sink in their own commie/jihadi bile. And cut off any and all ‘funding’ previously going to NY from US taxpayers.
God help the people of New York.
Why?
“Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.”
- HL Mencken
Here comes VENEZUALA!
Unlike London, NYC is not a national capital. And the NYC financial district does not get the same sort of legal special privileges as The City of London proper.
The existing trend of people and businesses leaving NYC will accelerate as it never would in London.
Perhaps even "Wall Street" will move. They've had contingency plans going back to the Cold War.
A lot of speculation that Wall Street will move to Dallas.
In my fantasy, 10% of the police force decides to take early retirement this week and wraps it all up by Nov. 4, 2025, followed by 20% by Jan. 20, 2026. Another 20% by Sept. 2026 would put the cherry on top.
In the last 60 years NYS has lost almost half its House seats.
The rot started a long time ago.
For some reason Deep State has decided to flush faster.
God help NYS.
1. Cuomo essentially did not run a campaign; his ego allowed him to think he’d win just because he is Andrew Cuomo.
2. The winner ran a real campaign, in all the boros, and generated enthusiasm Cuomo voters did not have.
3. Cuomo could again help make the socialist the eventual winner. He is thinking of also running as an independent, as is Eric Adams. So he could undermine Adams but with the socialist, not Cuomo, who will gain from it.
I could see Mayor Adams winning the general election
maybe with the slogan
“Save New York City, vote for the corrupt guy”
Affordability dies when you go socialism it’s the first step to communism comrades.
Guess why schools don’t teach that.
Hello California 2.0
More like Damascus or Baghdad
The rest of the corporations that make money all over the country better follow out of NYC, else Congress needs to make sure NYC taxes not deductible from federal.
I hope Trump saved a spare bunker buster for the Big Apple should the Commie jihadi win the mayoralty election
