Russia may be ‘a friend’ of Iran, but it seems unlikely to offer much

The Iranian foreign minister said on Sunday that he was heading to Russia to meet with President Vladimir V. Putin on Monday, as Iran weighed a response to a wave of U.S. strikes on its nuclear sites.

There was little sign that Russia was prepared to provide military assistance to Iran, its closest remaining Middle East ally, as it prioritized its own war against Ukraine. Iran has not received concrete support from any allies through 10 days of war with Israel and, now, an attack by the United States, leaving the country more isolated than it has been in decades.

In announcing the trip to Moscow, the Iranian foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, called Russia “a friend of Iran” and said that the two countries “enjoy a strategic partnership and we always consult with each other and coordinate our positions.”

By Sunday evening, the Kremlin had not confirmed the meeting.

Maybe they can take in some Iranian refugees.

Extra fodder for the front and all.

They can also take in all the so-called “Palestinians” from Gaza. Plenty of room for them in Russia.

Iran and China aren’t friends. Just like Russia and Iran aren’t friends, or Russia and China aren’t friends. Their relationships are purely based on convenience, nothing more.

Hence the reason why the chiComs are deadly afraid of a peace deal in the Uk-Russia war which may get Russia back in the good graces of Trump- they will be left on the outside looking in and President Trump understands this

I don’t see how they even have much to offer Iran.

It seems like the war with the Ukraine has depleted their supplies pretty seriously.

Russia is a nation in serious decline. It was the largest country of the former USSR, which played both sides against the middle in WWII to expand its borders. Russia got to keep all of the nukes when the USSR collapsed, and most all of its stock piles of old weapons and tanks. Putin has squandered them in Ukraine attempting to recreate the USSR by force. Putin can't meet his military needs in Ukraine, and therefore can offer nothing to Iran accept moral support. Putin might also fear that Russia's Muzzies might prefer to create a confederation with Iran than stay in Putin's Russia.
