To: Psalm 73

I retired back in ‘18 at 55.

So I thought it would be nice to get a job for 5 years to add to my accounts. I applied to TSA a few times.

I had 32 years of good work history
master degree
I think I’m communicative and present well…but that doesn’t matter.

I couldn’t even get an interview for a menial job.

Honestly I think it was my age (50+) and I don’t get enough boxes checked for them.

I’m in the same boat as you. And age has a role in perhaps a way you don’t think. There is a federal law against age discrimination.

I’ve read that some companies will quietly try to avoid hiring older people because of that law. And here’s why. A new, younger employee doesn’t work out. Fire him, and that’s it. But if it’s a new, older employee, the employer can be hit with an age discrimination lawsuit.

So weirdly, the law meant to help older folks can actually hurt them.
