The Most Important Decision in LifeReceiving Jesus Christ into your heart.
BY FAR the most important decision anyone can make because it takes one from death to life FOREVER.
MUCH more opportunities for eternal reward to follow, but receiving Jesus Christ gives one eternal life and heaven forever.

You’re right. The new birth is primordial. What the commencement speaker was saying goes more to sanctification

So the biblical form of the question we have been considering is: whom or what do you worship? Again, everything in your life will flow from your answer. I think you didn't read carefully or didn't understand thoroughly.

Worth noting: George Washington said it is one’s choice of a marriage partner.

A lot of people worship, reverence, and value a lot of things.
But the most important thing anybody does in this life is to receive Jesus by whose blood one is forgiven and redeemed forever (Eph. 1:7).
EVERYTHING else, no matter how consequential, is secondary to receiving Jesus and, thus, obtaining eternal life by grace, not works.

Needs to be repeated often and loudly. Accepting Jesus is the most important thing anyone can do.
