Russian (then Soviet) abortions peaked in 1989, just before the collapse of the Soviet Union. Ironically, the US abortion rate peaked at just about the same time.

Its data shows that the rate of abortions among women has generally been declining in the U.S. since 1981, when it reported there were 29.3 abortions per 1,000 women in that age range. A total of about 1,000,000 abortions were performed in the USA in 2024
Meanwhile in Russia, in In 2001, 1.31 million children were born in Russia, while 2.11 million abortions were performed. In 2023, Official statistics put the number of live births at 1.25 million and abortions at 450,000 in 2020 - over a 75% decline. Russia’s rate is about 12 abortions per 1,000 women.

This theory originated in the Alyeska pipeline from Alaska. Alaska’s output is dying and some folks proposed the same effect that would shut it off entirely.
