Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson was hailed by his fellow stars as tributes poured in following the legendary musician's death aged 82.

The God Only Knows hitmaker shot to fame as the frontman of the Beach Boys, for which he served as the principal songwriter as well as the co-lead vocalist.

Last year, weeks after the death of his longtime wife Melinda, it emerged that he had been diagnosed with a neurocognitive disorder similar to dementia.

When news of his death broke Wednesday, his fans leapt to social media to share their grief, including Elton John, who shared a throwback photo of them together.

'Brian Wilson was always so kind to me from the day I met him. He sang ‘Someone Saved My Life Tonight’ at a tribute concert in 2003, and it was an extraordinary moment for me. I played on his solo records, he sang on my album, The Union, and even performed for my AIDS Foundation,' remembered John.

'I grew to love him as a person, and for me, he was the biggest influence on my songwriting ever; he was a musical genius and revolutionary. He changed the goalposts when it came to writing songs and shaped music forever. A true giant.'

'Anyone with a musical bone in their body must be grateful for Brian Wilson’s genius magical touch !!' wrote Fleetwood Mac legend Mick Fleetwood.

'And greatly saddened of this major worldly loss!! My thoughts go out to his family and friends Mick Fleetwood and the Fleetwood Mac Family.'

100 years from now, people will still be enjoying Beach Boys songs and nobody will even remember who Katy Perry or Bouyancy was.

Say what you will about Elton John, but he seems like a class act.

Some years ago, there was a post by a FReeper who had met Elton John when he was working as a furniture mover in NYC, many years ago. He was in a delivery crew that took something to Elton John's house.

He said that Mr. John was very nice, had soft drinks for them when they finished, stood in his kitchen and talked with them for a while. This was in response to someone who said something nasty about the celebrity.

He stayed in the hotel I worked at in Nashville.

Met him twice. Super nice man. He came down to the lobby once and noticed we had a piano in the lobby bar.

He played 2 songs.

Not really. It was a long time ago.

I kind of remember Tiny Dancer.

Regarding Elton John. He came and sang at Rush Limbaugh’s wedding at Palm Beach. Also, Shaun Hannity told the story about Elton John, said he would call into his radio show when Shaun was broadcasting out of Atlanta. (Elton was living in Atlanta at the time.) On Shaun’s birthday, Elton had a cake delivered to Shaun at the radio station. Elton had the gay gene, but regardless he was a super talented song writer/singer/piano player.

Loved the Beach boys too. Had the chance to the perform live.

Sooner or later, we need to start thinking about the kind of world we’ll leave to Keith Richards.

Brian Wilson was my musical icon, but it hurts less that he was able to live so long.

Just saw the Biopic on the Zombies “Hung Up On A Dream” It should be released to streaming later this year.

There’s a bit in there about a reunion show in LA held a week before Paul Atkinson passed. Brian was a friend and came to perform at the show. Brian asked Paul what song he would like him to sing (I forgot which one it was). Brian said, “I don’t perform that song live.” But then when he sat down at the piano in the show... he sang the song Paul had requested.

Celebrity deaths don't normally affect me, the only other one was Robin Williams. But this stings a little. He had a tough, flawed life, but he WAS a genius. PET SOUNDS was in the can when he was 23 years old. And it is considered one of, if not the greatest, rock album ever made.

RIP BW
