U.S. cities hosting next year's FIFA World Cup faced questions on Wednesday about how to reassure international fans concerned by President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown and travel ban as the year-to-go countdown began. The United States, along with Canada and Mexico, is set to co-host the finals, which will feature 48 teams and a record 104 matches in a tournament that FIFA boss Gianni Infantino said would usher in a new generation of soccer fans.
Celebrities and soccer stars were due to walk the red carpet at the Fox Studio Lot in Los Angeles - one of the host cities - for the year-to-go event there, a day after President Trump deployed Marines and the National Guard to quell protests. California Governor Gavin Newsom described the deployment as an "unmistakable step toward authoritarianism," while Trump officials defended it and branded the protests as lawless, blaming local and state Democrats for permitting upheaval.
Los Angeles is one of several host cities marking the year-to-go occasion. New York-New Jersey held a waterside party on Wednesday, where local officials and fans celebrated against the backdrop of Ellis Island. Asked about comments Vice President JD Vance made last month warning World Cup travellers not to overstay their welcome, New York-New Jersey host Committee CEO Alex Lasry said: "Our goal is to make sure everyone who comes to New York-New Jersey has an incredible time."

Why would international fans need to be “reassured”
This smells like BS.
It’s Reuters. The first match is a year away. Surely Bass and Newsome will figure out how to stop the riots by then.
” Surely Bass and Newsome will figure out how to stop the riots by then.”
First of all, you’re giving Bass and Newsome a bit more credit than they’ve earned. Second, if it’s true that California law prohibits state law enforcement from working with Immigration Feds, Trump had no option other than mobilizing the National Guard if he wanted bad actors deported. There is also little doubt the “protestors” are paid professionals. It wasn’t Trump who escalated the protests.
Tri Colores will be the home team. That’s the Mexico national team.
The biggest early test will be the Club World Cup, which starts with a game in LA next Tuesday. Inter Milano vs. Monterrey FC.

Correction: Sunday there’s an earlier game. Both will be at the Rose Bowl, which is theoretically out of the riot zone (unless the Antifoids try to stir up some hooligan activity).
Switzerland kicked out ass last night.
World Cup of what? Eurojerks? Soccer is NOT a real sport.
Rugby Union and Aussie Rules Football have that covered.
Good. We cannot support our team when we're not wearing the red, white and blue uniform.
The Club World Cup is a disaster in the making. FIFA is not ready.
Agreed. And the rioters were damaging Federal buildings and the local sheriff’s were not stopping that
Zero advertising. I knew nothing about it.
A valid visa that is complied with (meaning: leave when you are supposed to) is a great start. Don't commit any crimes while here is the coup de gras.
Reuters is performing deportation porn.
Oh noze, internaional soccer fans are worried. Orange man bad.
Probably the same reason I would. I'm not going within 200 miles of LA for any reason reassured or not.
What idiot thought it would be a good idea to stage an international sporting event in a city full of violent homeless lunatics'.
USMNT blows ass.
“World Cup of what? Eurojerks? Soccer is NOT a real sport.”
Not for nothing, is soccer called communist kickball.
Shouldn’t be a problem. Just move all the matches to venues in red states.
