The question is, rather than getting saved by outside forces, would this benighted State and City actually be better off to go through an energy disaster and, perhaps, have its voters learn a little something from the experience?

Would the New York residents learn anything or would they just blame "greedy business" and President Trump?

There are those so infected with TDS, they blame Trump for everything. If Trump wasn’t there, they would find another target. It’s a mental illness.

All it should take is one snail darter to derail their entire plan. It derailed the entire Tennessee dam project.

New York? They have a large supply of Zionist colonists and oppressors of the long suffering Palestinian people!

Depends on which NYers you’re talking about.

Plenty of Upstate is red and votes that way.

The worst parts are the cities and if you look at a red/blue precinct by precinct voting map, you can clearly see the major cities and tier locations along the Thruway all the way down to NYC.

Yes, there are still liberal elements in small towns in NY where liberals have fled for safety, to get away from the conditions they created. And sadly, they are recreating them there too, as is SO typical of liberals.

Yes. Tompkins county springs to mind.

The contrarian is just that a blowhard contrarian.

Here someone did the actual math for him. NYC could easily export energy even in winter time with modern thin film solar panels just on the roofs of existing buildings and parking decks. Yes every one knows the sun doesn’t shine at night that’s not the point. Every watt generated is a what you don’t have to burn natural gas for or spin Hydro turbines in Canada. Saving those resources for another day or for better use like plastics, fertilizers or medications. Every chemical engineer screams in pain when they see valuable natural gas being burnt for power, it used to be illegal and for good reasons.

How much of NYC would you need to cover in solar panels to turn it into a net exporter of electricity?

NYC uses about 50 TWh of electricity per year.

NYC has ~780 square kilometers of land area, and a GHI of 4 kWh/m^2/day, giving a primary solar resource of ~1,100 TWh/year - more than 20x electricity demand.

Let’s assume we only place panels over existing impervious surfaces on buildings and parking lots.
(the impervious part of the first 45.5%)

That brings our area to 261 sq km and our solar resource to 380 TWh/year.

With 23% efficient panels and 14% system losses (for dust, inverter losses, etc.) we get 75 TWh/year.

We would need to cover ~2/3 of the impervious surfaces in the “buildings & lots” category to generate as much electricity as NYC consumes.

This leaves open all existing sidewalks, streets, parks, vacant land, airports, etc. and doesn’t include any vertical surfaces which could allow for capture of a larger fraction of NYC’s primary solar resource.

The power density of solar PV is high enough to turn the densest city in the U.S. into an exporter of electricity.]

Winter is not an issue any more with vertical thin film , think South facing building walls.

https://x.com/JessePeltan/status/1919427851129860183

[A south facing vertical solar panel in NYC would generate 3/4 as much electricity as a horizontal panel over the course of a year, but 1.8 times as much in December and January.

There’s still plenty of sunlight during the winter in New York, but the Sun is lower in the sky.

Winter is not an issue for solar in the U.S. the way it is in Northern Europe.

New York City is further south than Barcelona, Spain.]

Actual math and real science. The numbers speak for themselves everything else is opinions, feelings and beliefs, in other words irrelevant.

As least frame a argument from quantifiable facts.

Climate disaster? Depends on which “climate” they’re concerned about. Weather or fear.

I grew up in WNY. Moved to NH in 1985.
It is kind of amazing to watch for the last 62 years(my age) the Dem politicians of NYS destroy what WAS the Empire State.

Keep in mind Niagara Falls, NY was the place they basically invented hydro electric power through alternating current. There was a guy named Nickoli Tesla working there for George Westinghouse.

The Rockefellers made New York the Empire State by shipping oil in tanker rail cars instead of by truck. Therefore, giving his company an advantage on pricing and making him one of the richest men in the world.

NYS has huge reserves of METHANE. Natural gas is so abundant that it literally leaks out of the shale rock in various places in NY.
Yet, the politicians that control the state will not allow fracking. Which could greatly benefit the poorest part of the state(Binghamton). That has suffered economically where just across the border in PA people are becoming rich because of it.

I have long thought that the entire environmental movement was/is facilitated and funded by oil-rich countries trying to weaken us both by cutting off our oil-producing capacity and sowing chaos in the country.

Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse; Watertown, Utica, Albany are all easily visible on that map.

And Binghamton, IIRC.

If we’d vote for this, then why does Deep State have to steal our elections?!

NYC has RCV for a reason.

We need to secure our elections.

“And sadly, they are recreating them there too”

Yes, I see this constantly in my small town in south central NH. The liberals from MA, NY, NJ move here. I pass one right around the corner about a mile from my house on the way to and from work. She is an older woman. Bought the house during covid. I figured she would be a problem as soon as I saw the MA plate on the Prius parked in the driveway. The next spring the BIDEN sign went up. Now she has a banner on her shed/barn that says RESIT with the commie FIST on it.

It continues to repeat itself. They are half way done with a small subdivision again about a mile south into the next town. I drove through Saturday morning. It is a 55 and over development. All one story duplexes. There were four units being newly occupied. Two had NH plates on the vehicles. Two had MA plates. So. I figure there is a 50/50 shot with these people. Maybe.

This is absolutely true. Fracking in the USA for oil/gas has a direct effect on what oil/supply/price has around the world. Petroleum from ND and West Texas competes directly with the same light sweet crude from Nigeria.
Just like Heavy Sulfur Crude from Alberta directly competes with the same heavy crude coming from Venezuela.

No different than the Methane coming out of Russia competes with Methane coming from Qatar, US or Australia. It just depends on how efficiently they can turn it to LPG then ship it around the world. In the case of Russia or the Stans whether there is a pipeline delivering it to western Europe.
IF that pipeline ceases to exist. Then their best alternative is buying LPG delivered to some port. I then becomes a function of the freight cost to get it there, the monetary exchange rate and tariffs/duties.

When is Lee Zeldin and this EPA going to end the Endangerment Finding for CO2. That is Trump’s greatest failure in his first term. This needs to happen now before the midterms

It surprises me that the Adirondacks has so many blue counties. I can understand the metro areas.

It is also easy to pick out the counties that have SUNY college towns. Like Oswego on the shore of Lake Ontario. Or Plattsburgh, Binghamton, St Lawrence U, Colgate, Cornell, etc.

Then on the shore of Lake Erie about half way between Buffalo and the PA I assume is the Indian Reservation county.

Also look at Staten Island bright Red down in NYC.
