Illegal re-entry after prior deportation is an automatic felony. Wonder what the recidivism % is that ICE is finding?

The idea that illegals commit fewer crimes has been debunked.

It was based upon a study done on Texas Jails
But only repeat offenders were identified as being illegals. That identification was only made after they were released the first time.

U.S.C. § 1325: Improper Entry
First offense: A fine under Title 18 or imprisonment for up to six months, or both.
Subsequent offense: A fine under Title 18 or imprisonment for up to two years, or both.
Civil penalties: Fines ranging from $50 to $250 for each entry (or attempted entry) and twice that amount for repeat offenders, in addition to criminal penalties.

Ms. Hostin, illegal entry is a federal crime. It is NOT a civil offense.
https://www.findlaw.com/legalblogs/criminal-defense/is-illegal-immigration-a-crime-improper-entry-v-unlawful-presence/

She is conflating the issue with someone who has overstayed their visa. That is a civil offense.

I think I’ll break into her house. A squatter is not a criminal just because they don’t have the deed to the house. And since I’m a different race than her, if she objects I’ll call her racist.

According to the latest poll on the issue, A Marquette University poll on May 15, 2025, 66% of Americans support deporting Illegal Aliens.

There has been little change in views of deporting “immigrants who are living in the United States illegally,” which, in a half sample of respondents, is favored by 66% and opposed by 34%. From February 2024 through May 2025, in eight of nine national Marquette Law Poll surveys, 60% or more have favored such deportations, with one poll finding support at 55%.

They are if they entered illegally.

Technically overstaying a visa is not a crime though.

“American citizens commit more crimes than anyone who is undocumented.” You got data to substantiate that statement sweetheart?

If I crossed the border of any country (including my own) without presenting a passport, and usually a visa, to immigration authorities I’d have been subject to arrest and, at the very least, deportation. A squalid jail cell and fairly unpleasant interrogations in some of them. So yeah, undocumented border crossing is pretty much a universally recognized crime.

Wrong, counselor.
Key Provisions of the Visa Overstay Penalties Act are: Makes visa overstays a crime: Classifies overstaying a visa as “illegal entry” under federal law, closing a major national security loophole. Criminal penalties: Imposes up to 6 months in jail for a first offense and up to 2 years for repeat offenses.
“Sunny”? Dat you?

Sonny, sorry lady, but you don’t get to define “racism”.

In your world anything you don’t like is “racist” so your opinion on the subject is rejected. Have a nice day.

Technically, she is right. Simply crossing the border is a “civil” issue, not a criminal one.

That said, the immigrants they are going after have felony charges or convictions. These people would be ineligible for immigrant status. Those folks ARE felons.

The messaging on the left is so muddled that people think Trump is pulling little children out of school and slamming them against the concrete. He is not.

What protesting people are missing is that if the Sanctuary Cities would work with ICE we could get the felons arrested and leave the others to go through the system.

But, nope…it wouldn’t meet their need to make everything dramatic and social media click-worthy.
