I’m rooting for Mason Howell, the 17-year-old from Georgia who qualified for the tournament. He just went to his Junior Prom and now he’s playing in the US Open.
Howell finished Round One at +7 - Tied for #135
The cut is Top 60 plus all ties.
Still a lot of players on the course.
If the cut took place as I write, +2 and lower would make the cut.
Some big names finished at +3 or larger...
Bryson DeChambeau (F) +3
Phil Mickelson (F) +4
Rory McIlroy (F) +4
McIlroy was -2 at hole #9 or #10.
He chipped about 10 feet from the pin for what looked like a straight forward birdie putt. Then, his ball rolled backwards about 10 more feet. He missed the birdie putt, missed the par put, and holed the bogie putt. He lost five more strokes to par in the next eight or nine holes.
