Russian farmers are begging President Vladimir Putin to help them deal with a massive influx of antelopes that are wreaking havoc on crops and water supplies in the Saratov region.
Already dealing with his attempted invasion of Ukraine, Putin now has his own 'invader' to worry about - one that threatens his homeland's food supply.
Approximately a million saiga antelopes, recognized by their distinctive, bulbous noses, have reportedly invaded the south-western province, many crossing into Russia from neighboring Kazakhstan.
The Saratov region, situated along the Volga River and known as Russia's sixth-largest grain-producing area, has been ravaged by these Eurasian herbivores, which have feasted on the annual harvest of roughly four million metric tons, accounting for 3.5 per cent of Russia's total grain harvest.
Local farmers have taken to various Telegram channels to voice their concerns, stating that thousands of antelopes have also drowned in rivers, polluting the water supply.
"We hope for your understanding and assistance in resolving this situation, which threatens the very existence of agriculture in our region," one post reads.
Hunting or culling saigas is illegal in Russia, following the near extinction of the species in the 1990s.
The resurgence of the saiga population, now estimated at around four million compared to just 25,000 three decades ago, has been hailed as a conservation triumph by experts.
