I also think that the conniptions over this food coloring or that preservative which are banned by the Europeans cedes oversight of American food safety to foreign regulators. Many of the supposedly bad ingredients appear only as trace elements, and also the fact is that WE ban some additives that the Europeans allow.
If ingredients are "unfit for human consumption" they should be banned by the FDA, not by some state legislature with zero capacity to make scientific determinations about food.
Many American manufacturers want to sell worldwide.
There should be two general standards for goods, the EU and the US federal.
If X corp. can sell something in either Brussels or DC, it should be able to be sold worldwide without the slightest modification.
The California Prop. 65 stuff needs to be federally outlawed.
Mexico has requires labels for excess sodium and excess sugar.
SNAP benefits need to be restricted to ‘healthy’ foods of modest cost.
California EBT will pay for fast food. California has lots of overweight residents.
I recently went down a rabbit hole regarding the use of the E200-E900 food labels. Ex: a product could say its 100% lard, and then you see something that is coded E300 or a variant of E3**
These are antioxidants and acid regulators, but what kind and what precise form? not listed.
Sorry, I want to know whats in the stuff I’m consuming, not by using generic codes either.
“the market will adjust.” For generations, food stamps have been sold for 50 cents on the dollar to buy what they want from junk food, to cigs, to drugs. Food pantries hand out lots of junk food so Pepsi, Frito Lays and Hershey will continue to have a thriving business.
What we need to do is cut SNAP down to confetti. It is supposed to be temporary aid, not generational. The local food stamp secretary got tired of clients hollering at her because their kids didn’t have milk but then they wait in the lobby with their friends bragging about getting their hair and nails done to go partying on the weekend. She calculated their benefits vs. her working 40/hr to prove they got much more and quit her job right then.
SNAP states, “The maximum monthly SNAP benefit for a four-person household in Texas is $939... The maximum monthly income for a 4-person household to be eligible for SNAP in Texas is $4,125.” Excuse me, but we’ve never had a working paycheck for that much. Remember the $939 SNAP is 70% of the $1350/mo the government thinks it takes to feed a family of 4. That is ***3 TIMES MORE*** than this household’s food budget, which we usually stay under and we don’t get free phones, internet, discounted utilities, etc.
Tell me why SNAP doesn’t subtract the 360 free breakfasts and lunches students get at school, the free food boxes sent home for the weekends and the summer free lunches for ages 0-21, huh? That is double dipping and double charging the taxpayers, imo. Triple and quadruple charging when they are automatically eligible to get food from as many food pantries a month as they wish. Then there are churches, shelter meals and other charities. If you don’t want your blood pressure to skyrocket, don’t search youtube for food pantry hauls where they whine the pistacios are only cracked and not completely shell-less, or they got non-kosher foods which is tossed in the garbage rather than given to their neighbors or they use food pantries so SNAP can pay for their weekend seafood feasts.
It only takes half an hour to put a hot meal on the table so the SNAP folks can get off the couch for that instead of waiting in line for an over priced Big Mac Meal.
