Before Putin invaded Ukraine, he demanded NATO withdraw from eastern Europe: Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, etc leaving all those countries under Russian "sphere of influence".
There we go. Such a move would have been inconsequential, because we could have always come back in force, or with missiles, if Russia moved to take those nations over.
