I do not know about Grunt Bitchin’ nor Portugal but in this country, the good ol’ USA, it is ILLEGAL to let children alone without adult supervision! I would think that in a foreign country it would be even MORE important not to let children alone! The parents are dumb-oxen!

They were on vacation and thought they were in a safe environment. They likely didn't know where to find a baby sitter, and didn't think it necessary. Yes, in retrospect it was a horrible error that they have to remember for the rest of their lives. They didn't know that someone had been watching them and must have discovered their routine. A pedophile saw the opportunity, and grabbed the child after entering by a window. The suspect, who is now in prison on other charges, reportedly told a friend that he had captured something small at the time of the disappearance.

Common behavior in Europe or used to be. You park the kids in their pram
outside the shop when shopping etc this behavior was not unusual.
