In Iowa, Trump’s agenda collides with 2028 ambitions [Rand Paul & Rick Scott]

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and Florida Sen. Rick Scott, at fundraisers in Iowa this week, sought to explain to the Republicans who are poised to have the first say in picking the party’s 2028 presidential nominee why they want to put the brakes on the “big, beautiful” bill that contains much of President Donald Trump’s agenda.

But Sue Cheek, a resident of Eldridge nearby, didn’t want to hear it.

“We are the ones that elected Trump. This is what we wanted him to do. So let him do it,” she told CNN minutes before Scott took the stage at a fundraiser Friday night at a casino in Davenport.

“We are in a critical place right now in our country,” said Cheek, who works at a credit union. “I don’t care how much it costs to make our country secure. Once we get that done, then we can worry about that other stuff.”

Trump is only months into his second term in office, but already, ambitious Republicans are flocking to the state whose caucuses are expected to kick off the party’s 2028 presidential nominating contest. Paul spoke at a GOP fundraiser in Cedar Rapids on Thursday, and Scott followed with a fundraiser in Davenport on Friday. Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders will speak at the conservative Christian group The Family Leader’s summit in July. Days later, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin will visit Des Moines to headline the state party’s Lincoln Dinner.

The two senators arrived in Iowa while the fate of Trump’s legislative agenda rested in the Senate. Conservatives like Paul and Scott are demanding changes — with Paul seeking to remove a debt ceiling increase and both seeking much steeper spending cuts. Their positions put them at odds with many Republicans....

I like Rand, but his ambition isn’t to run in 2028 as an independent, so I think he at least needs to choose his battles.

Paul will absolutely not be forgiven by the base of the party for undermining Trump's agenda.

Any 2028 candidacy is DOA.

The 2028 Republican ambitions will be a real spectacle, and not in a good way. There will be a stampede of candidates moments after the mid-terms.

And they will all fall away before or just after Iowa. Many of these candidates run for the contributions without any expectation of winning. The quadrennial losers parade.

Remember when rand paul showed how shady he was....

when he got the support of the good ole boy's club GOPe when he had kentucky's law changed so he could run for president and the senate at the same time?

Yep.... little big man has always had big ambitions...

even when he hasn't shown he's capable of anything and no one wants him as president

You’re right about running for contributions. Its good that R’s have a deep bench but this can also lead to a donnybrook.

You would think that what happened to Ron DeSantis and his 2024 run would be a cautionary tale, but apparently not so much.

Besides, NO MORE SENATORS. That is not a proving ground for future leaders, but a destination for people who are more interested in camera time instead of leadership.

Both squishes to my mind. Not TOUGH enough for this job.

Besides neither of them can beat Trump in 2028. Trump is a “LOCK”.

Yes, he will run and will win.

He was cheated out of a term and deserves to be made whole.

You say that he got his second term. NO, he EARNED IT! He has not been compensated for the one that was STOLEN from him.

The ONLY remedy for the treasonous prevention of his term in 2020 is to allow him another term. At a minimum, be allowed to RUN for that term.

I would prefer that the illegal election of Joe Biden be vacated and Trump declared the winner (which he was) of the 2020 election. Then allow him to serve that term right after this one.

Its only fair and just.

Randy and Scott should resign and play darts from now on.

And there it is!

Rand’s behavior is not about the country’s best interests but all about Rand’s best interests!

“They are members of a co equal branch some of you forget this”

I do know those two clowns are enriching themselves while POTUS Trump accepts nothing while putting his brand on the line if he fails.

According to the US Constitution, the three branches are equal but nothing is mentioned about the elected. Almost all currently elected officials are certainly not at equal. Most elected officials are greedy ba$7ard$!!

Trump will run in 2028 and will win?

I wish I knew how to link threads and find them again. I would like to hear your comments in 2028, when someone other than Trump is the Republican nominee.

But for now, explain if you like, how do we get around the 22nd amendment for Trump to run again?

Regardless of where he stands on the issues, Rand Paul is never going to be elected President. He just does NOT have the charisma. I say this as one who supports Rand and has met him a couple times.

Sorry to be so blunt.
