I think the MSM is intentionally downplaying the reason. Reading between the lines here:

I’m guessing it was because the sentencing was harsher for these conservatives than the sentencing routinely given to others. The original judge called them the Trumps of the South. So while I agree they are criminals, I don’t think they should be targeted unfairly. The MSM isn’t going to tell us the details.
