I never use public USB ports, only my little USB charger cube. It's my "condom".
I never use public WiFi for anything confidential either.

Use a USB data blocker. They are under $10. It’s a small device, about the size of the USB plug, that allows fast charge but no data transfer.

I’ve almost always used the “free” USB ports to connect to my battery pack, then charge my phone off the battery pack. Or, plug my laptop into a 110 V outlet, and charge my phone from the laptop.
