We lived in Indianapolis back in the ‘60s.
Went to the ‘66 and ‘67 Indy 500s.
In ‘66 we sat close to the first turn and on the first lap there was a pile-up that took out one third of the cars.
There was only one injury and that was AJ Foyt climbed a huge fence to escape the wreckage and cut his hand.
As I remember the ‘67 was rained out and we went back the next day.
1966 was one of the first races broadcast by ABC, albeit a week later. Chris Schenkel did the race. You can find the broadcast, crash included, on Youtube- it is really cool
