The Colonel's troops begin resisting being used as prisoner labor to build a needed bridge for Japan's supply trains. The Colonel convinces his men to show the British superiority over the Japanese by building the bridge that the Japanese failed to build before. He points out the flawed building technique, the wrong bedrock location, etc. The Japanese prison camp commandant agrees to the Colonel's terms and Alec Guinness and his men begin building the bridge.
Somewhere along the way Guinness loses sight of the mission. He identifies with the superiority of the British and begins to protect the bridge. When he notices a British commando raid sent to blow up the bridge, he tries to stop it to save his wonderful bridge.
Only with his dying breath does Guinness realize his error and mutters to himself, "What have I done?"
I dont want to see Paul have an epiphany after it's too late and wonder in hindsight what he did to undermine his own side because he put his own perfection above all else and ended up giving aid and comfort to the opposition.
