European leaders have called US President Donald Trump to discuss proposals for a 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine from Monday while on a visit to Kyiv.
The call came after leaders of the so-called "coalition of the willing" held a meeting to discuss advancing peace talks.
The leaders of France, Germany, the UK and Poland were hosted in person by Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky, while others joined remotely.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the coalition backed a "full and unconditional" ceasefire - originally mooted by Trump - and that the EU was ready to "impose further biting sanctions" if it was broken.
Trump earlier reiterated the call for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire after a phone call with Zelensky.
"If the ceasefire is not respected, the US and its partners will impose further sanctions," he wrote on social media.
As the meeting was going on, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia was already "used to sanctions" and knew how to minimise their impact, adding: "There is no point in trying to scare us with these sanctions."
Meanwhile, Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian president and now deputy head of Russia's Security Council, told the European allies to "shove these peace plans".

Thank you very much and God bless you.
Russia doesn’t need the ceasefire
Ukraine does
Russia needs to get with the program and stop wasting President Trump’s time and patience.
“Russia doesn’t need the ceasefire. Ukraine does.”
Exactly - why would Russia want to let the Neocons re-arm Ukraine and likely send European troops into Ukraine - just to bring the world closer to nuclear war? Not gonna happen, regardless of any personal attacks by Zeepers.
Exactly. Such a ceasefire just allows the Ukes to rearm and redeploy. Russia would never agree to it.
There is a sense of urgency by the EU on all this ceasefire stuff.
Two factors:
Relentless Russian advances
US budget fight about to dominate all White House thought.
This is President Trump’s ceasefire. Get with the program.
This is President Trump’s ceasefire.
“This is President Trump’s ceasefire. Get with the program.”
We TRUMP SUPPORTERS are not Mind-Numbed Robots as you guys always say we are. We think for ourselves and inform ourselves, and STATE OUR OPINIONS.
Sorry if that bothers you guys.
Putin is going to regret rejecting President Trump’s ceasefire.
Insofar as Putin truly attaches no importance to human life, that is correct.
But the pro-Putin crowd here at FR has been calling for an "end to the bloodshed." They have repeatedly cited humanitarian reasons for the withdrawal of Western support from beleaguered Ukraine so that the "senseless fighting" could finally stop.
Now, our noble President Trump is calling for an at least limited cease-fire.
The fact that Putin's Kremlin spokesman laughs at President Trump's proposal should be evidence enough that the Russians are not sincere, that they are not negotiating in good faith.
All of you FReepers who have been arguing for years, now, that you only wanted the killing to stop should not now be making light of President Trump's serious proposal, or approving of Putin's peremptory dismissal of this proposal. Instead, you should be castigating Putin for his willful refusal to agree to an even only temporary stop to the killing.
Now you are showing your true colors!

Facts on the ground.
Trump is acting in the knowledge that right now the West doesn’t have the will to act against Russia.
But if Putin keeps rejecting Trump’s generous offers, that will change.
He will learn that Trump can be your best friend, or your worst enemy.
“Russia doesn’t need the cease fire.”
Minsk III?
Merkel and Hollande openly stated that the purpose of the Minsk agreements was to give Ukraine time to build up its armed forces. So now the Euroweenies expect Russia to fall for another “Minsk” (in which not only Ukraine but now also Europe will get a respite and some more time to build up their armies)?
Do they think Putin is that stupid? Fool me once, shame on you. Fill me twice, shame on me.
One of the conditions that Russia insisted on in any 30 day cease fire negotiations last month is that all military aid to Ukraine will have to pause during that time
Of course Ukraine rejected it (I don’t Blame them)
The situation on the ground is rapidly turning to Russia’s favor
So either Ukraine agrees to hand over the four regions Russia demands and sign a permanent peace deal including no NATO membership or Russia will take the regions by force and 1000’s more will die
It’s not pro Russia it’s pro reality
I don’t understand what you think the alternatives are
You think the 10th round of Sanctions will suddenly cause Russia to collapse and then Ukraine can take back the land with their military?
So, you're all TRUMP SUPPORTERS - until the moment when President Trump departs an iota from policies benefiting Putin.
The arguments you Putin-supporters have advanced here were always 100% in agreement with the Kremlin line. Never have you expressed the slightest criticism of Putin's prosecution of this bloodthirsty war of conquest against Ukraine. In your book, Zelensky was always at fault. In doing so, you revealed yourselves to be Mind-Numbed Robots (to use your phrase).
You've always claimed to harbor no innate animosity towards Ukraine, nor any bias in favor of Russia. Rather, you have always professed complete equanimity and impartiality, citing only the desire to save U.S. tax dollars and limit unnecessary bloodshed.
Yet instead of standing behind our president and welcoming this proposal, as you should, you are cheering on Putin's war machine!
Yeah, we can see now how "unbiased" you are!
