Mexico is suing Google for ignoring repeated requests not to call the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America on Google Maps for US users, President Claudia Sheinbaum says.
She did not say where the lawsuit had been filed. Google did not respond to the BBC's request for comment.
Sheinbaum's government contends that...the US lacks the authority to rename the entire gulf.
In January, Sheinbaum wrote a letter to Google asking the firm to reconsider its decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico for US users. The following month, she threatened legal action.
At the time, Google said it made the change as part of "a longstanding practice" of following name changes when updated by official government sources.
It said the Gulf - which is bordered by the US, Cuba and Mexico - would not be changed for people using the app in Mexico, and users elsewhere in the world will see the label: "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)".
Trump hinted Wednesday that he may recommend changing the way the US refers to another body of water.
During an upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia, he plans to announce that the US will henceforth refer to the Persian Gulf as the Arabian Gulf or the Gulf of Arabia, AP reported.

I wish Trump would rename the Salton Sea in California to the Dried-up Brine Sea.
1. The priority should be deportations.
2. Deportations would be easier if Mexico cooperated.
3. Trump is needlessly insulting Mexico, making them more likely to obstruct sealing their borders or taking back their migrants.
4. Trump is thus making the jobs of front line ICE agents that much harder.
Some Freepers will respond, "We don't need Mexico's cooperation -- We can FORCE them to do our bidding!"
Which is a childish attitude, and does nothing to facilitate deportations or make life easier for ICE agents.
As I recall, the name didn’t change on Google Maps until it was registered by the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) on February 18, 2025. At that point it “officially” became the Gulf of America as far as the US Government is concerned.
It’s not Google’s fault. The US Government says it’s the Gulf of America. The US drives the world’s economy. The world really doesn’t give a flip what Mexico thinks about it no matter what they might say. They know who the big dog is.
I think these kind of name changes are an unnecessary waste of time, but I have zero influence on whether it takes place or not. Mexico, as well, has no influence on what the POTUS chooses to call a particular body of water against American shores.
If he tried to change the name of Mexico City to Trumpistan then I'd agree. This though is not quite so clear cut.
He did it to allow for drilling, to get passed Biden’s bans...from what I read.

No one says Mexico "owns" it. Names often aren't assigned to who "owns" something, but as a matter of history or tradition.
The Gulf bordered the Spanish Empire long before America existed.
Even if America has the stronger claim, why not be magnanimous and leave this one for Mexico? Why be petty and bullying?
As for who has a "right" to a name, are you aware that other nations in the Americas have long resented that the U.S. is called "America" when there are many other nations in the American hemisphere, North and South? They wonder why the U.S. gets to "own" the name "America."
If the U.S. gets to be called America, I see no problem with naming the Gulf after Mexico.
More importantly, as I said in my post, there are practical benefits to not insulting Mexico.
Maybe you're a leftist who doesn't want deportations to succeed?

I disagree, and think that Trump is giving it right back to the revisionists who have caused statues of old white guys to be removed, and Indians to be banished from butter cartons and baseball caps.
Considering that Meh-hico allowed invaders to traipse across their land and sneak into our country, renaming the gulf is rather tame in my estimation. He should respond militarily, these are bad people down there running that $hit-hole of a country.
