OK, I’ll be serious. There was a time, not in my lifetime, when the purpose of Pennsylvania was to be a place where every religion could be practiced without fear or favor. It’s why there was a William Penn willing to establish Sylvania, except that the king said it had to be Penn’s Sylvania. (My graduate mentor Romeo Cascarino wrote an opera about William Penn, took him 25 years.)

Jews left the Holodomor and came to Philadelphia because they could be safe there. Irish Catholics near northern Ireland left their religious battles and their famines and came to Philadelphia because they could be safe there.
